Good Game, Good Competition, Good Fun

When the schedule is published each season there is always a reaction by players.  Each player has a reaction to certain games on the schedule.  Sometimes there is a spirit of competition due to friendships on the other bench.  Other times there is a groan because of the team’s or players reputation.  Less often there is a collective smile and joyful anticipation because everybody knows that it will be a fun competitive hockey game.  Last night was one of those games.  The second game of the season pitted the Ice Hawks against the Ice Dogs in what has become a schedule highlight each season.

As expected, the teams both brought their best game.  For three periods the action went back and forth.  Good scoring chances were developed by both teams, and goalies on both teams thwarted the effort.  Not even 30 seconds into overtime, Chris York received a breakout pass from the defense and found himself, along with Jason Withrow behind the Ice Dogs defense.  Chris made a quick pass to Jason who buried the puck for the win.  Only one word to describe the play – “Textbook”.

The other highlight of the game was the play of defenseman Chris Hanaway.  Not only did Chris work hard to contain the Dogs offense in our own zone, he was a force in the offensive zone.  Holding the point, driving the net, shooting the puck, he did it all.  He was one of the players who helped define the flow of the game as well as set the pace and intensity.  Keep up the great work Chris!

Game 1 Recap

The Ice Hawks opened the Summer 2011 season with a thrilling, action packed game against Fireballs White.

The first period began slowly as both teams scraped off some of the rust from the off season and familiarized themselves with their new team mates and lines.  The action really started to kick off in the second period.  Scoring was opened at 5:00 by Jason Buehler with an assist from Chris Kaufman.  The second tally came with 28 seconds left in the period when Jason Withrow deposited the biscuit off a pass from Chris Klingaman.  Going into the third period the Ice Hawks were up 2-1.

The third period was a back and forth affair, with the Fireballs taking the lead into the bottom of the period.  With 46 seconds left, Bob McKelvey connected with the puck in a mad scramble in front of the Fireballs net and sent the game into overtime.

Overtime did not produce any scoring, and the game went to a shootout.  Chris York, Chris Klingaman, and Jason Buehler were unable to solve the Fireballs goalie.  Shooting fourth, Chris Kaufman put the puck in the net.  In our end, goalie James Santho shut down the Fireballs with an outstanding performance.  The final score was Ice Hawks 4, Fireballs White 3.

Contributing to this action on the ice were several new and returning players.  Welcome James Santho and Chris York, and welcome back Jason Buehler.
